Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed!
We all think we are safety conscious, especially when it comes to our home. We make sure that our fire alarms work correctly, that we lock all doors and windows before leaving the house and that we switch off all plugs before going on holiday, but are we being as safe as we think? Impossible to detect without the aid of an alarm, Carbon Monoxide poisoning claims the lives of 30 people each year and many more become seriously ill as a result of it. In fact according to research* by the Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed campaign, eight out of ten people (81%) could actually be at risk of this deadly gas because they dont have an audible alarm and with around one in ten of us not realising just how dangerous Carbon Monoxide is to your health**, there is a serious concern about our lack of knowledge. Carbon Monoxide is produced when fuel-burning appliances, such as boilers and cookers are incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. Danger signs that indicate the possibility of a Carbon Monoxide leak include gas appliances burning with a lazy yellow or orange flame, sooting or staining around the appliances, and excessive condensation in the room where the appliance is installed. In this video Melissa Matthews, whose brother Tony died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and Dr Rob Hicks, explain the dangers, the symptoms and just how easy it can be to make your home safe. Carbon Monoxide can kill. Most of us know that. However, as the toxicologist in this video explains, it’s the effects of non-lethal and long-term exposure that most people don’t know about. Those effects are real and unpleasant to the person exposed, but are normally being attributed to another cause. For the safety of everyone in your shop, please use Crushproof brand rubber exhaust hose.

My carbon monoxide detector keeps going off, why?
This detector is about 12 years old. The brand is a Kidde Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Well about a week ago it just randomly went off. I changed the batteries, and about an hour later it went off again. Not me nor my parents felt any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning but we opened all my windows and I shut off the hot water heater thats right across the hall from the detector just to be safe. We just thought its the detector messing up because its so old but we dont know for sure. Anyways the next day after it went off we turned the hot water heater back on and the detector didnt go off untill today which has been a week since it last went off. But we have a newer detector that plugs into the wall right underneath the old one and it hasnt went off. So is the older detector just too old or should I call the fire department! And also has anyone else had trouble like this with their carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide poisoning?
My sister left the gas stove running by accident and I am really concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning, but since my sister hates going near hospitals or clinics I can’t convince her unless the amount of carbon monoxide we have been exposed to is fatal. I want to know how long you have to be exposed to carbon monoxide until it kills you?? Thanks.

What gas law does carbon monoxide poisoning classify as?
I didn’t really know how to word the question. I’m doing a project on carbon monoxide poisoning and mainly it’s exploring the gas laws (Boyle’s, Charles’s and Gay Lussac’s [Maybe the ideal one too]).
Is there a side where it’ll tell me or give me more information besides

It’d be really helpful.
CO+Hb->COHb
this is the reaction if it helps.

Can carbon monoxide poisoning cause a stroke?
My father-in-law recently suffered a stroke. Two days prior, he was working in the hold of his boat working on the engine, along with two other people. The hold is enclosed and the engine was running. Some of them started having a headache. My father-in-law shooed them out and he finished up in a few more minutes. For the next couple of days he complained of his stomach not feeling right. Then as he was walking up some steps, he fell and became unconscious for just a minute. Ambulance came. He was disoriented and threw up. Still in hospital but improving.
I’ll add that he does take several high blood pressure medications, but has no history of strokes. (Blood pressure was high when ambulance came.) I know that we may never know, because it could have all been blood pressure related, but is/are there any definitive studies linking carbon monoxide poisoning and strokes?
